Screening in Tokyo of the film "The Battle of Algiers", subtitled in Japanese
The Embassy organized, on December 11, 2024, a screening of the Algerian-Italian film "The Battle of Algiers", subtitled in Japanese, at the Ambassador's residence, in the presence of the Tunisian Ambassador to Tokyo and the Chargés d'affaires of Libya and Syria, members of the Japan-Algeria Friendship Association, representatives of the "Friends of Western Sahara" Association, academics and Japanese friends of the embassy.
Before the screening, the Ambassador of Algeria made a brief presentation recalling the historical context of the demonstrations of December 11, 1960, which "constituted a turning point in the history of the Algerian people’s struggle for their freedom, in that they transmitted a very clear message to international public opinion, affirming the union of the Algerian people around its sole legitimate representative, the FLN, and its determination to continue its fight whatever the sacrifices, thus putting an end to the colonial myth of “French Algeria”.
The Ambassador underlined the importance of such cultural events contributing to making friendly peoples, such as those of Japan, better known about the history of Algeria and its struggle.
Mr. Ambassador also specified that the film “The Battle of Algiers” is not considered as a simple artistic work, but that it constitutes a kind of historical documentary, because, he added, it had been made only a few years after the independence of Algeria and in the same places where the events really took place, specifying that one of the leaders of the FLN at the Casbah of Algiers (the late Yacef Saadi) himself, played in this film his own role in the historical facts recounted in the film, which gives historical value to this cinematographic work.
At the end of the screening of this film, participants were invited to visit a photo exhibition on the national liberation struggle.
